Are You Ready for the Next Generation of Portfolio Commentary?

March 3, 2015 Mary Grace Glascott

Recently I attended a fundraising event, conversing with fellow attendees on what you normally talk about when meeting people for the first time: the weather (a touchy subject right now in Chicago), where do you live, what do you do, etc.

The woman I was talking to mentioned that she was a portfolio manager at a financial services firm, a job she typically enjoys except during the current time period: portfolio commentary time.  She spends weeks producing commentary, a tedious, time-consuming process that takes her away from what she really loves about her job– working with a team of analysts and researchers to make investment decisions for her asset-management vehicle.

Although I was meeting her for the first time, I immediately recognized her pain point, as its one many share across multiple occupations: spending too much time on manual processes, precious time that could be devoted to more high-value activities.

Luckily, we are in an era of transformation, where innovative ways to automate manual processes are enabling us to spend more time doing what we love and less time laboring over time-consuming tasks that are prone to error and difficult to scale.

One such innovation, Quill Portfolio Commentary, automatically analyzes financial data and transforms it into perfectly written commentary, enabling asset management firms to generate marketing-approved and compliant content within seconds.

A recent Ignites Financial Times article explains:

One of the emerging applications of artificial intelligence is in writing performance reports and portfolio commentary. Traditionally, portfolio managers or investment writers and editors spent weeks poring over performance data and writing summaries for internal audiences and fund shareholders alike. But companies like Chicago-based Narrative Science have developed means to take in data feeds from fund investment accounting and portfolio analytics systems and turn them into narrative summaries within a few days.”
